Women's status disappointing in Nepal: INSEC
According to a report unveiled by INSEC on the occasion of the 104th International Women's Day here in Lalitpur today, 1, 569 women became victims to domestic violence last year.Nepal is a signatory to different UN Conventions and international instruments on women rights but the women here are victimised in different sorts of violence.
Of the cases of violence against women reported in the country in 2013, most of them were related to the domestic violence, a report says.
According to a report unveiled by the Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) on the occasion of the 104th International Women's Day here in Lalitpur today, 1, 569 women became victims to domestic violence last year.
A total of 3,048 women and children were subjected to violence against them in this period, the report states. Similarly, 178 women and girl children were murdered for different reasons. Of them, 108 were killed by the members of their families while five by in-laws for not bringing dowry, six killed after rape and one killed on the charge of witchery.
Speaking at the programme, INSEC Chairman Subodh Raj Pyakurel said the polygamy, rape and sexual abuses, trafficking, and aggression on witchery charge are the common forms of violence against women in Nepal.
Despite legal provisions against the gender-based violence against women, the survivors have been deprived of proper justice due to poor execution of laws concerned, and the prolonged transition in the country, he said.
The central region is in the forefront in view of the occurrence of women violence. A total of 651 women suffered violence against them in the region in 2013.
He stressed on launching of public awareness programmes and campaigns on poverty reduction, women's education and empowerment and effective implementation of laws concerned to combat violence against women.
Meanwhile, a rally was organised at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu today on the occasion of the International Women's Day. The rally jointly organised by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare originated from Bhrikutimandap and ended at Basantapur after passing through Putalisadak, Bagbazaar, Old Buspark, Bhadrakali, Sundhara and New Road.
Also on the occasion, Ministry's Secretary Dinesh Hari Adhikari emphasized on elimination of all sorts of discrimination against women and their empowerment.
Chairperson of National Women's Commission Sheikh Chandtara underlined the need of drafting a women-friendly constitution and ensuring women's participation in every state apparatus.
