The embassy, which is also accredited to Lebanon, said that 80 illegal Nepali workers living in Lebanon have come in contact so far. Officials at the Lebanon’s Department of Immigration have said that they would help in the
repatriation process without fixing fine against the workers, Nepali Acting Ambassador to Egypt Kaushalkishor Raya told the Post over the phone on Tuesday. Raya just returned to Egypt after his seven-day Lebanon visit.
He said the Nepali workers will return home within this month after they are provided with air tickets from the Foreign Employment Promotion Board in Nepal. He said he has already written to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the matter.
He said the Nepali workers came in contact with the help of Lebanon-based Non-Resident Nepali Association and 45 of them were already provided with travel documents for their return.
Raya said the remaining 35 Nepali workers will be provided with travel documents from Egypt-based Nepali Embassy within this week. Most of the illegal Nepali workers are women working as housemaid.
Dilli Poudel, an NRNA representative in Lebanon, said there are around 8,000 Nepali migrant workers, most of whom are women working as housemaid, in the country.
He said that 700 of them are estimated to be living without necessary documents.
Meanwhile, Raya said there might be some Nepali migrant workers in war-torn Syria and that they are working to gather information on the matter.
