Govt urged to consult war victims
Conflict victims’ organisations have urged the government to consult the victims and stakeholders while drafting the bills on transitional justice mechanisms. The conflict victims’ calls come a day after Law Minister Narahari Achaya pledged the House that the government would bring the bills on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Disappearance Commission within 15 days.
On Wednesday, ten conflict victims’ organisations, including Bandarmudhe Victim Concern Committee, Social Justice Committee Nepal and Conflict Victim Orphan Society Nepal, issued a joint statement saying the bills to be drafted without consulting victims would be against the Supreme Court order to the government.
“We would like to remind the government and political parties that commissions formed without consulting victims will not address the concerns and issues of ownership of the conflict victims,” read the statement.
They also submitted memorandum to the Ministry of Law, Ministry of Peace and the Parliament Secretariat demanding that they should not be sidelined in the process of drafting the bills
