Man held on smuggling charge
Police raided a shop owned by Balaram Prasad Gupta at Janakchowk on Wednesday and seized a huge quantity of smuggled gold and silver.Shyam Sundar Shashi
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Metropolitan Crime Division in Hanumandhoka and the District Police Office in Dhanusha raided the electronic shop and seized 6 kg of gold and 390 kg fo silver. Superintendent of Police Uttamraj Subedi said the market price of the seized gold and silver is about Rs 52.5 million. The security personnel also seized Rs 7.3 million cash and two bank cheques of Rs 6 million. Both the cheques were issued in the name of one Sanjaya Sah.
Subedi said police are investigating about the possible involvement of Sah in smuggling.
Gupta, one of the operators of local Janaki Medical College, has been accused of smuggling of Indian currency and gold. Police source said Gupta’s porter was nabbed with 4 kg of gold from Janakpur Airport 10 years ago. During a press meet organised by police to make him public, Gupta, however, claimed he had the necessary bills of purchasing the silver. He said the seized gold belonged to some other businesspersons.
Subedi said police have been informed that some people in Janakpur are involved in smuggling gold.
