Female parliamentarians press for residence, transport facilities
Female lawmakers across the party line on Tuesday demanded a joint residence and transportation facility to ensure their security. On Tuesday, female lawmakers across the party line demanded a joint residence and transportation facility to ensure their security, in a report submitted to Speaker Subas Nembang and Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam.
Submitting a demand list prepared by a taskforce led by Nepali Congress lawmaker Usha Gurung, they said a common residence could help ensure their security as most of them do not own a house in Kathmandu.
Buses managed by the Parliament Secretariat provide service only within Ring Road while many lawmakers live outside. A few weeks ago, NC lawmaker Rita Shahi faced an attack in public transport and such cases are "increasing".
Female lawmakers have said the Rs 5,000 residence allowance they receive is insufficient. On Tuesday, they met the Speaker, the home minister and Law Minister Narahari Acharya to press their demands.
"I have drawn the Home Minister's attention to the female lawmakers' demand," said Nembang. Due to the meetings of both Parliament and the Constituent Assembly, lawmakers are returning home late in the evening.
If a joint residence is not possible, lawmakers have said there should be a proper transportation arrangement, clarifying that their call is not for individual vehicles.
The plan to build a residence for lawmakers has stalled due to a row between government entities over who is authorised to build it.
NC lawmaker Gurung argues that having a joint residence will lesson the government's cost of providing security to women lawmakers.
