Bass and Beyond
Having spent more than two decades rocking the bass guitar, Nirakar Yakthumba is today known around town as a veteran Nepali rock musician. What are you doing these days?
We (1974 AD) have been working on a new album, so I’m busy with that at the moment. Three songs have already been composed, and initially, we plan on releasing the singles. Other than that, there are musical programmes going on. We recently toured London and Dubai. There’s another music festival in South Korea that I am heading to in October.
What are your interests apart from music?
I love adventure sports. I’m fond of mountain biking. So I’ve teamed up with friends and set up a tour company called Life Cycle Nepal. I like swimming too, and I’m taking an advanced swimming course, as I have plans to go to the Philippines to surf towards the end of this year. I never miss a chance to get involved in any activity that gives me an adrenaline rush.
We have heard that you love playing pranks. Is that so?
I have lots of friends and we like to sit together, crack jokes and fool around. And I’ve got to admit that there have been times that I’ve played pranks and actually created some pretty memorable moments. I don’t belong to a circle of serious people, you see. I believe that there is only one life and one should enjoy it to the fullest. I try to teach this to my children as well. But I’m not implying that life should be taken casually. You need to be passionate about what you are doing; never waver from your goals, and always try new things.
Are you much of a reader?
I do like to read books but I’m more of a random reader. I don’t like reading fiction much, though. I usually read non-fiction, mostly biographies and books on philosophy. I also like to read self-help and self-realisation books. They always have something new in store for you to learn. I often read books by Deepak Chopra. The last book I read was Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson. It is an interesting book and I’ve read it so many times. Every time I read it, I discover something new.
What kind of films do you like to watch?
I always choose to watch light movies, ones that I do not have to concentrate too much on. So, comedies, rom-coms, in fact, interest me the most. I also enjoy watching action-packed movies. When it comes to actors, I like Gerard Butler, Wesley Snipes and Jackie Chan the most.
What about your taste when it comes to food?
I’m not much of a foodie. I eat to live and don’t live to eat, so I don’t make a fuss about what I’m eating. But I do love momos, and they’re my all-time favourite food. I never get tired of eating them. I do like to cook as well but only once in a while. I think I make very good omelettes.
Are you obsessed with gadgets?
Not at all. My mind does not cope with technology all too well. I can’t even use Facebook properly. For me, a phone means a phone and a music system means a music system. So I try my best to keep it as simple as it can get.
Are you into fashion and brands?
I like to keep myself updated about what’s in and what’s trending. But rather than looking for brands, I mostly buy clothes that are comfortable and that look good on me. I don’t even mind buying clothes at a random store as long as they have what I like. But when it comes to jeans, I mostly wear Diesel.
You profession takes you to places far and wide. Any favourite places?
I love travelling as it is both informative and refreshing. You get to see so many things and meet so many new people. Every time I go to a new place, it is a completely new experience for me. Among the places I’ve been to, I really liked Australia. It is so lively and the people there are easy to get along with. There is nothing uptight about the place and the beaches there are lovely. Italy is another delightful place to go to. The seaside towns there are amazing. You also get to do a lot of adventure sports there.
Is there anything you like to collect?
I like old furniture. So whenever I go to a new place—a new restaurant for example—I like to see the set-up and the designs. And be it my home or office, I like having unconventional furniture around me, like an old bed or an ancient sofa. Some pieces of furniture that I have at my home are even older than me.
Is there anything you’re really scared of?
Earthquakes! I still remember the last one. I was in my room when all of a sudden the speakers started falling off and things were all over the place. It was like a scene from a horror movie.
Finally, if you were not a musician, what would you be doing today?
I don’t know. I mean, it is quite hard to think of things that way, but maybe I would have become an event-organiser if I wasn’t a musician.
