UML 9th GC: Oli wins leadership race against Nepal

Jul 15, 2014-

CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli has been elected as the new chairman of the party from its ninth General Convention , on Tuesday.

Oli secured his win over rival leader Madhav Kumar Nepal after maintaining the lead of 39 votes. As per the latest vote count, Oli garnered 1,002 while Nepal trailed behind with 963 votes. The official announcement of the final poll result is yet to be made.

Likewise, seven office bearers each from Nepal and Oli faction have been elected, informed leader Ramnath Dhakal.

On Monday, Nepal was slightly ahead of his rival KP Sharma Oli, though he was trailing behind Oli on Sunday.

The UML ninth General Convention will elect 15-member Office Bearers of the 159-member Central Committee. The jamboree will also choose members of the central disciplinary commission and the central audit commission.

On Sunday, the Oli faction had maintained the lead due to the votes of 256 representatives, elected automatically from the party’s Central Committee members, representatives of central advisory committee, central disciplinary commission, veteran communist club, and few more representatives elected from party’s sister organisations.

Oli is said to have stronghold in Lumbini, Gandaki and Rapti and Bheri zones while Nepal has respectable strength in Seti Mahakali and Karnali regions.

Out of five voting centres, votes of three voting centres have already been counted. The counting of the votes of the remaining centres is underway. The two centres have the votes of Gandaki, Lumbini, Bheri, Rapti, Dhaulagiri, Seti, Karnali and Diaspora.

Although the vote count was said to be started from 8:00 am, it was delayed after a meeting was held between Party Central Election Commission and National Congress Main Management Committee after dispute was surfaced on the votes counted on Monday, said Election Commission member Sanuraj Pokhrel.

The UML ninth General Convention will elect 15-member Office Bearers of the 159-member Central Committee. The jamboree will also choose members of the central disciplinary commission and the central audit commission.

The CPN-UML election committee resumed the counting of votes for the new party leadership on Tuesday.
