A delegation headed by Nepal Engineers Association (NEA) Chairman Dhurba Thapa met Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and handed over a draft regarding the Sunkoshi landslide.
During the meeting, Thapa submitted the draft prepared after consultation with water experts, geologists and road engineers regarding the resumption of water flow from the dammed Sunkoshi River in Sindhupalchowk and re-construction and resumption of roads damaged by the landslide.
Submitting the draft, Chairman Thapa expressed the association’s commitment to volunteer and help the government in the implementation of the draft.
Thapa informed that the draft primarily focuses on the resumption of the water flow at Sunkoshi River and the re-construction of an alternative route along the Araniko Highway, stressing on the importance of the highway for Nepal-China trade.
Accepting the draft proposal of the engineers, PM Koirala informed that the government was expediting distribution of relief to the landslide victims. Koirala also added that efforts to rehabilitate flood victims and the reconstruction of damaged highway were also underway.
Around 150 people were killed in a massive landslide in Jure village of Sindhupalchowk on August 2. The landslide has also created an artificial lake, obstructing Sunkoshi River.
