Art with a cause
A collective exhibition titled Artists Unite—A Call for Action in Support of Flood Relief is currently being held at the Siddhartha Art Gallery, BabermahalA collection of paintings and photos by 92 senior as well as young artists — from both home and abroad — have been put up on display.
“We have collected approximately nine lakh rupees through sales proceeds of more than half of the works on display and through food stalls that were placed during the opening day,” said participating artist Hit Man Gurung. “Our aim is to collect a good amount of money — at least Rs 10 lakhs.”
Almost all the works contributed by senior Nepali artists have been sold. The organisers have also been encouraging artists who are not a part of the exhibition to donate artworks.
Veteran singer Deep Shrestha was also a visitor to the the gallery space yesterday. He said, “Such an initiative on part of the artists is a very supportive gesture.”
Sudeep Balla, in a work that is being exhibited, has executed a portrait of Shrestha that is painted below the words “Gaunma sayed pahiro gayo ki”— a line from the singer’s hit song Haar Raat Sapanima.
During his visit to the gallery, Shrestha picked up a guitar and sang the song in front of other visitors.
The exhibition will continue till September 12
