Indian grant for eye health care project
The Indian government has pledged to provide Rs Rs 10.27 million to the Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) to carry out the School Eye Health Care Programme in various districts.According to a press statement issued by the embassy, the assistance will cover the cost for providing 9,000 optical dispensing devices to visually-impaired children and 300 low vision dispensing devices to school-going children in Nepal during the year 2014-15.
Mobile Medical teams will visit the scheduled schools and perform health education sessions for students and parents parallel to the ocular examination of children. The teams will examine about 190,000 children during period.
India has been providing assistance to the NNJS to carry out the programe as part of the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme since 2001. Under this programme, optical devices/spectacles have been distributed to over 37,000 children. A mobile eye care van with ophthalmic equipment was also gifted to the NNJS for implementation of the programme in 2009.
