Bhaktapur traffic books 39 for drunk driving
Thirty-nine people were booked for drunk driving along the Koteshwor-Surya Vinayak road from the day of Phulpati (seventh day of Dashain festival) on October 1 to October 5.According to Bhaktapur Metropolitan Traffic Police (BMTP), compared to last Dashain, the number of bookings on drunk driving offence along the six lane stretch dropped by nearly 50 percent this time while no road accidents was reported. Around 80 people were booked for drunk driving last Dashain.
Koteshwor-Surya Vinayak road is considered one of the most accident prone areas in Kathmandu Valley. Consumption of alcohol goes up during festivals like Dashain which means increased chance of people driving under the influence and causing accidents.
“Compared to last year, we were stricter about drunk driving. Other than that, the number of people drinking and driving also decreased because they were informed about our control mechanism,” said Lava Kush Thapa, inspector of BMTPC.
BMTPC has set up six check points to stop vehicles for drunk-driving test at Sallaghari, Jagatey, Nalingchock, Thimi, Gathathar and Sangha Bhanjang.
Besides anti-drunk driving campaign, BMTPC has also been monitoring over-speeding vehicles.
