PAPAD stages sit-in to press for constitution
Dec 23, 2014-
Representatives of various professional organisations on Tuesday staged a sit-in in front of the Constituent Assembly (CA) building in Nayabaneshwor, demanding promulgation of the new constitution on time.
The sit-in programme was arranged by the Professional Alliance for Peace and Democracy (PAPAD) and coordinated by the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ). "Let's not forget the commitments to the people, promulgate the constitution by coming January 22," the participants chanted the slogan pressing the political parties in the CA for drafting the statute within the scheduled timeframe.
FNJ President Mahendra Bista was present among the people joining the sit-in. He stressed that the top political leaders should at any cost give the people their constitution within announced date. The political parties have just a month to execute their election promises to the people, he added. He urged the leaders not to visit the villages until they complete their mission.
Nepal Bar Association's President Hari Krishna Karki warned the political parties not to waste time outside CA and urged them to focus their entire efforts on the constitution-making.
Nepal Medical Association's Chairman Dr Anjani Kumar Jha, Nepal Engineer Association Deputy General Secretary Dinesh Chandra Panthi, Nepal Teachers' Union General Secretary Jhaka Bahadur Dangi and FNJ General Secretary Ujir Magar announced to continue the pressure-creating programmes from the street until the constitution is promulgated.
