Lane discipline prevents accidents: Traffic police
Traffic police have penalised 17,870 lane violators since they started enforcing lane discipline from October.According to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD), the provision of road furniture and proper road signals in the valley in wake of the recent Saarc Summit has made it easier to spot lane offenders.
Road users flouting lane regulations are fined Rs 200 per offence and they have to attend a one-hour mandatory awareness lesson conducted by the MTPD itself. The MTPD said that a total of 16,268 drivers have taken the class so far.
MTPD started examining lane discipline through CCTV camera footage as well from January.
Road mishaps in Kathmandu have significantly decreased after the MTPD’s campaign against drunk driving. With lane offenders being scrutinised, such accidents have further gone down.
Traffic police have also launched a special campaign to enforce the provision of reservation seats for women and disabled in public vehicles. However, despite reservation seats being marked operators and passengers have been found disregarding them.
According to the MTPD statement, 2,540 drivers have been booked so far for such violations. In addition, 11,993 drivers and 1,054 passengers have been reprimanded and made aware of the regulation while 63 vehicles were made to mark reservation seats.
