Nepalis fastest growing immigrant population in Australia: Report
Nepalis have become the fastest growing immigrant population in Australia, according to a report published by an Australian media outlet.The growth of the Nepali community has certainly beaten China and India in terms of annual growth rate of immigrant population born overseas, southasia.com.au said, citing the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
As of June 2014, the report said, persons born in Nepal had the highest rate of increase between 2004 and 2014, with an average annual growth rate of 27 percent. This simply implies an increasing number of people who are born and educated in Nepal are opting to immigrate to Australia each year, the report said.
The latest census of Australian government taken in 2011 recorded 24, 636 Nepal-born people in the country, an increase of 439.6 percent since the 2006 census.
The 2011 study of population distribution by state and territory showed that New South Wales had the largest number of Nepali population (15, 297), followed by Victoria (4,310), Queensland (2,138) and South Australia (1,038).
Australia has become the most sought-after destination for Nepali students in the recent years. Officials at the Ministry of Education attribute this to the liberal visa policy adopted by Australia.
The population of Nepali students in Australia is the fifth largest among foreigners studying in the country. In the fiscal year 2013-14, the ministry said 28,124 Nepali students took 'no objection certificates' to study in Australia.
Brazilians occupied the second position with an average annual growth rate of 12.6 percent, followed by Pakistan (12.5 pc), India (11.6 pc) and Bangladesh (10.4 pc).
The most favoured destinations for these foreign born nationals in Australia are Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and South East Queensland.
