Unknown disease kills 8 in Jajarkot
A team of officials led by Health Minister Khagaraj Adhikari is flying on Sunday to Jajarkot district, which grapples with an unidentified disease, to take stock of the situation there.At least eight people have died while around 1,000 have been affected in the past two weeks from the disease with symptoms similar to common flu. Patients have high fever, muscle cramps and joint pains, and headache.
Shanta Bahadur Shrestha, secretary at the Health Ministry, said the team will have medical officers and lab technicians.
Dr Deepak Pun, a medical officer who has reached the affected area from the district headquarters, said at least 300 patients were treated on Friday alone for the ailments. The disease has been reported in Paink, Nayabada, Sakla and Archhani VDCs.
The District Public Health Office has confirmed the death of eight people in the 20 to 70 age group so far. The outbreak site is said to be two days’ walk from the district headquarters.
Dr Baburam Marasini, director of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, said they will collect throat swabs from the people in the area for tests.
