98 large scale aftershocks in 72 hours
A total of 98 large-scale aftershocks were recorded till 12 noon today, 72 hours after the massive earthquake with epicentre in Gorkha district shook the country on Saturday.The tremor measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale was felt with the epicentre at Barpak, Gorkha, at 11:56 am on Saturday morning. After that, two large scale tremors measuring over 6 on the Richter scale and 96 aftershocks from 4 to 6 Richter scale were recorded.
According to the National Seismology Centre, 98 large scale aftershocks and some 400 aftershocks below 4 Richter scale were recorded during 72 hours after the earthquake.
Chief at the Centre, Lokbijay Adhikari, told the National News Agency (RSS), that a tremor measuring 6.6 Richter scale occurred in Gorkha after 32 minutes on the same day, Saturday, and another 6.9 Richter scale aftershock with the epicentre on the border area of Dolkha and Sindhupalchowk districts hit at 12:54 on Sunday.
The number of aftershocks after the Gorkha earthquake has been gradually decreasing.
In the initial 12 hours of the major tremor, a total of 38 small and large scale tremors were recorded while 38 aftershocks were recorded after 24 hours.
Similarly, 13 aftershocks were recorded on Monday while seven till 12 noon today, according to the Centre.
A tremor recording 4.4 Richter scale occurred at 4:11 am today with epicentre in Gorkha district while a 4.9 Richter scale tremor with epicentre around Rasuwa district was felt at 5:05 am
