Parties start talks on nat’l unity govt
In the wake of the devastating April 25 earthquake and aftershocks, the ruling and opposition parties have started formal talks on forming a national unity government.Top leaders from both the blocs reviewed the post-quake scenario and discussed on the formation of the unity government.
At a meeting held at Prime Minister Sushil Koirala’s residence in Baluwatar on Thursday, the ruling parties asked the main opposition UCPN (Maoist) and
Madhes-centric parties to be part of the government in crisis and move ahead collectively.
The opposition parties have given their nod to the proposal, but have sought a detailed work plan about the government formation.
“We have reviewed post-quake scenario. We all are one in forming a national unity government. But things are not clear yet on how to formalise it,” said Nepali Congress Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel.
CPN-UML Chief Whip Agni Kharel said all leaders have reached an understanding to form a national consensus government to tackle the challenges brought on by the devastating earthquake and complete the long outstanding constitution writing process.
“We have agreed to stay all the parties united to face this crisis and form a national consensus government. Talks will be continued for this purpose,” said Kharel.
