The country’s constitutional human rights watchdog has objected to the use of children in Friday’s demonstration in the Capital against India’s undeclared blockade to Nepal.
“Our field inspection on Friday found that eighth graders were used in the demonstration,” National Human Rights Commission said in a statement. “There is a risk to the children if they are used in strikes and demonstrations.”
Thousands of teachers, parents and students in the Kathmandu Valley had formed a 27km-long human chain around the Ring Road in a bid to internationalise the Indian blockade in Nepal and pressurise the concerned authorities to ensure children’s right to education.
NHRC said that the act on Friday constitutes violation of United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Children’s Act of 1992. It further said that it is the birth right of every child to be able to attend school and to study without fear urging organisations and political parties to refrain from using them.
