Two girl students were found hanging from a tree in Dhankuta Municipality-3 on Saturday.
Police said Devi Pariyar, 16, and Junu Pariyar, 18, of Dhankuta-3 were found hanging from the same branch of the tree. The victims were cousins. The nature of the incident, according to the police, suggests that the victims committed suicide together. Local people, who went to the area to collect fodder, saw the girls hanging and immediately informed police.
Devi was a seventh grader at Gokundeshwor Higher Secondary School while Junu studied at Bhasha Higher Secondary School. According to neighbours, the victims from impoverished families were in stress after deaths of their mothers.
Samjhana Pariyar, the victims’ relative, said that the girls had been staying at their rented room as they were ignored by their families. She said their fathers had married second wives after their mothers’ demise. “It is found that the girls’ economic condition was poor. An investigation is under way,” police said.
Human rights activists claim that most suicide incidents in the district are caused by domestic violence. Seven people, six of them women, committed suicide in the district in past four months.
