Athletics selection: Goit, Lamgade set new marks

Goit, a 19-year old medical student, leapt 7.09 metres to shatter a 16-year old long jump record of Krishna Bahadur Giri. Giri had set the mark during the 1999 SAG in Kathmandu. Giri held the record of seven metres. Chhabilal Chaudhary and Dilli Khatri of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) finished second and third.
Nepal Police Club (NPC) broke 29-year old record in women’s shot put. Lamgade threw 10.75 metres to shatter the previous best of 10.69 set by Manu Shrestha during the 1986 National Athletics. Lamgade had also set a new long jump record of 43.90 in javelin throw on Thursday. Sita Shahi of TAC and Basanti Chaudhary of NPC finished second and third respectively.
Rajendra Basnet of TAC won the men’s shot put with a throw of 13.87m, beating Puscal Khadka and Prem Huching of Nepal APF Club. Another TAC athlete Krishna Chaudhary won the women’s long jump with a leap of 5.26m. Shila Chaudhary of APF and TAC athlete Ramita Chaudhary finished second and third respectively.
Som Kumal of TAC beat Aashish Chaudhary for the men’s 400m title in 49.7 seconds. APF’s Dilmaya Karki won the women’s 400m in 58.8.
Ashok Kunwar of TAC bagged the men’s 400m hurdles title in 57.5 seconds. Durga Devkota of TAC was the lone competitor in the women’s 400m hurdles and finished in 1:13.2 minutes.
Nepal Athletics Association will pick up 22 athletes—11 each in men’s and women’s sections—for the SA Games slated for January 10-20 in India. The Selection Tournament includes 30 events with NAA preparing to select athletes as per their performance and medal prospect.
