The situation became tense after the agitating cadres rained stones and hurled a petrol bomb at Janak Police Station within the Janaki temple premises. The SLMM cadres and security personnel hurled stones at each other, and the latter fired a few rounds of teargas shells.
According to Dhanusha district President of Sadbhawan Party Sanjaya Kumar Singh, 21 protesters were injured after police baton-charged them. One protester Ram Chandra Mukhiya, 20, who became unconscious due to deep injuries in his ear and head, has been sent to Dharan for intensive treatment.
On the other hand, 14 security personnel have been injured during the protest and five of them are in critical condition, SP Ram Dutta Joshi informed.
The SLMM cadres have intensified their protests after Sadbhawan Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato was injured during a clash with security personnel in Biratnagar on Saturday.
The schools and colleges that came into operation for past one week have been shut from Monday, while shops and businesses remained shut.
