Pressure is mounting within main opposition Nepali Congress to seek alternative to KP Oli government.
During Monday’s meeting of NC’s Parliamentary Party, Congress lawmakers called on the party leadership to initiate no-confidence motion.
NC lawmakers have accused the government of failing to curb corruption, tame black-marketeering and expedite reconstruction among others. Following pressure from lawmakers, who came down heavily on the Oli government, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba proposed to from a “shadow Cabinet to study the tasks undertaken by all ministries”.
The NC lawmakers said that they would begin a signature campaign within and outside the party from Tuesday against the government if it does not agree on holding discussions on some pressing issues like attack on the judiciary, flourishing black-market and corruption and key appointments like ambassadorial ones and others.
“We will start a signature campaign demanding answers from the prime minister on these issues,” said NC lawmaker Ram Hari Khatiwada. “If the prime minister refuses to hold discussions on these matters, we will initiate an adjournment motion that will ultimately see the government fall.”
The budget session of Parliament is set to begin on Tuesday.
According to Khatiwada, initially, the signature campaign will be launched within the NC and later other political parties, which have similar views on the government, will be brought on board. “The ultimate goal is fall of the Oli government,” he said.
NC lawmakers argue that the Oli government needs to work seriously to resolve the Madesh issue, implement constitution and expedite reconstruction of damaged structures. According to the NC lawmakers, if possible, the NC should lead the new government or else the party should support the UCPN (Maoist), the third largest party in Parliament, to form the government.
“The Oli government must be unseated as it is an outcome of an unholy alliance,” said Bal Krishna Khad, a leader close to Deuba.
