Couture fashion heats up the ramp
The highly-awaited The Kathmandu Post Presents Couture Fashion Nepal enthralled audiences in the Capital on Saturday evening.The highly-awaited The Kathmandu Post Presents Couture Fashion Nepal enthralled audiences in the Capital on Saturday evening. The show was headlined by New York-based international designer Andres Aquino, CEO of Couture Fashion Week New York, along with 10 Nepal-based designers including Kailash Kunwar, Amitesh Zarn, Pragya Chitrakar, Mukta Shrestha, Sushma Singh.
Speaking during the event, Aquino said the event would prove to be a giant stride for the Nepali fashion industry. “We are excited to be part of the Couture Fashion Nepal. I am looking forward to help the Nepali fashion industry flourish. It has so much potential,” he said.
At the show, Aquino flaunted designs which he said were made for a global audience. With a set featuring heavy embroidered dresses and gowns, Aquino had brought the show to an emphatic close.
Earlier, Mukta Shrestha’s craft revival and grassroots to glamour showcased dresses, gowns and kurtas made from Nepali Dhaka. Pragya Chitrakar’s design titled Pancha Tattva showcased a perfect blend of traditional sensibilities and contemporary modern designs.
Also on display in the evening were items from eight other designers who are competing for a place in the prestigious Couture Fashion Week New York scheduled for September 9 in the Big Apple. Then, international models Nea McLin, Kelsy McKenna, former Miss Paraguay Sendy Cacares and former Miss Honduras Belgica Nataly Suarez took turns to hit the runway in several sets. They also walked in colourful swimsuits designed by Aquino. The ramp was also graced by Nepali models—Aastha Pokharel, Anjali Lama, SabitaKarki, among others. The show was choreographed by Rachana Gurung Sharma.
Live performances by Sabin Rai and Pharoah, Abhaya and the Steam Injuns, Indian DJ Anish Anand and DJ Rupesh added more elements to the show while the models walked the ramp. “This is a great way to take our fashion industry to the next level. The show has had an interesting concept and the designs too were good,” Saurabh Jyoti, chairman of Syakar Trading Company, said afterwards.
Event organiser Aseem Shumsher Rana was excited about the response as he said, “This was a great event for the Nepali fashion industry. We are absolutely thrilled to have been able to bring a designer of Aquino’s calibre and international supermodels to Kathmandu.”
Rana also confirmed that a designer and two models from Nepal would be selected to participate at the Couture Fashion Week New York.
