NC steps up discussions on local body restructuring

A meeting of the NC Parliamentary Party convened on Tuesday at Parliament Building in Nayabaneshwor has been holding deliberations on the local body restructuring.
A team of Local Body Restructuring Commission (LBRC) Chairman Balananda Poudel has been summoned at the meeting. Poudel informed the NC lawmakers about the report prepared by the local body. The NC Parliamentary Party will hold group discussions on the issue, NC lawmaker Jagadish Narsingh KC informed.
The Parliamentary Party will submit its views after holding group discussions. The party lawmakers representing the seven provinces will be divided into seven groups for discussions.
The NC convened the meeting to solicit views from the lawmakers after the two-day deliberations of party district presidents concluded that there should be 1000 local units (village and municipal councils) across the country under the federal structure. The NC district presidents had suggested that both geography and population should be taken into account while restructuring the local bodies.
The political parties stepped up internal discussions after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal called on the political parties to put forth their positions on local body restructuring.
The LBRC had in July proposed that there should be 565 local units across the country under the federal structure.
