Of fogs and sunsets

The Terai belt of the country might not have those snow-capped mountains to flaunt, but, it is as rich in heritage, tradition, cuisine, and stunning landscapes. Often hot and humid during the summer months, the region boasts its own mystical charms during winters.
This winter, I travelled to Sarhali to capture a couple villages through my lenses. Often warm during the midday, the plains would be completely engulfed by fog before noon and after sunsets. As the villages fogged up, and the temperatures dropped down, people would huddle around fire in small herds to muse about their everyday life. Every so often, the children skipped school because of the cold.
As enchanting as the land is, the people lead a very down-to-earth life in the plains. As long as they have the Gaas, Baas, Kapaas—food, shelter and clothing—in place, they are content with and grateful towards life, a departure from the forever hungry and chaotic urban centres.
It is of little surprise that the Tarai is born anew during the winters; and while you can’t give over vistas spreading out into the horizon, there is something mystical and beguiling about the thick blanket of fog—and what might emerge from the void.
