No alternative to unity among parties to end deadlock: Ex-prez Yadav

Former President Ram Baran Yadav on Monday expressed his worry about the ongoing political deadlock in the country and said the only way to resolve the impasse is unity among the political parties.

Inaugurating the 10th assembly of Federation of Nepali Journalists Dhanusha chapter here in Janakpur on Monday, the former president called on the political parties to give a way out to the nation by amending the constitution as the deadlock will continue until the implementation of the new constitution.

“It’s been 18 months since I retired from the post of the president but the nation has not made any progress in terms of political situation,” said the former president. “The failure to implement the new constitution will give birth to tyranny. And it will be counterproductive to everyone.”

Recalling the moment of promulgating the new constitution, Yadav said he unveiled the new constitution amid agony and surrender. “I was in pain due to lack of contribution from all the political forces while writing the new constitution and was surrendering for my belief in democracy and republic,” he said.

In his speech, Yadav indirectly criticised the CPN-UML’s extreme nationalism, Nepali Congress’s status quoism, and Madhes-based parties’ obstinacy. He said the CPN-UML’s position to halt the constitution amendment process and the Madhes-based parties’ stubbornness to defy amendment through due process would not resolve the problem.
