Nepal lost to hosts Philippines 4-1 in the first away match of the AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila, Philippines on Tuesday evening.
Nepal suffered a blow in the 12th minute when they were reduced to 10 men as Nepal’s midfielder Bikram Lama was sent off after he blocked the ball with his hands to prevent Philippines from obvious goal scoring.
Later, Philippines were awarded a penalty for the handball, however, Nepal’s goalie Kiran Chemjong saved the penalty.
Philippines took a lead after the Filipino player utilised the second penalty they got after Nepal’s Rabin Shrestha committed foul in the d-box in the 21st minute.
Philippines doubled the lead in the 23 rd minute.
Hosts Philippines scored 3rd and fourth goal in the 28th minute and 72nd minute respectively.
Bishal Rai scored first goal for Nepal in the first half of injury time in the 28th minute.
Nepal played defensively the whole match after they were reduced to 10 men.
Nepal, who had crashed out from the first round of the joint 2018 Fifa World Cup and AFC Asian Cup, were granted the berth in the qualifier in place of Guam, who withdrew from the event.
Despite failing to earn their place in the final round of the Qualifiers, AFC gave Nepal a second chance following their victory in the AFC Solidarity Cup in Malaysia.
Nepal had clinched the trophy by defeating Macau 1-0 in final in Kuching.
