Oppn parties to foil charter amendments
An alliance of opposition parties led by the CPN-UML has decided to stand against the constitution amendment bill tabled by the government in Parliament. An alliance of opposition parties led by the CPN-UML has decided to stand against the constitution amendment bill tabled by the government in Parliament.
A meeting of the alliance held in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, on Thursday also decided to register more amendments to the proposal.
According to Bahujan Shakti Party Chairman Biswendra Paswan, the parties agreed to table amendment proposals jointly and separately.
Deputy leader of UML Parliamentary Party Subas Nembang said his party would take leadership to ensure that the government’s charter revision proposal is defeated.
The opposition parties have more than one-third parliamentarians in total. If the opposition parties kept the alliance intact, the government would fail to muster the two-thirds majority required to pass the amendment bill.
The government, however, claimed that the amendment bill would be passed without the opposition parties. Sources claimed that leaders of the Pariwar Dal are in contact with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to support the bill.
The opposition alliance says the amendments proposed by the government are against national interests. The government had tabled the bill in order to get the agitating Sanghiya Gathabandhan on board the local level elections.
