The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has deployed 60 staffers to count the votes of local level elections.
The metropolis deputed the staffers following criticism from several quarters over the delay in counting the votes.
Gyanendra Karki, spokesperson at the KMC, said that the metropolis fanned out the staffers on the request of Election Commission (EC).
Five teams are counting the votes in the Kathmandu district at present. Each team consists of five to seven people.
Out of 280,000 voters, over 195,000 people cast their votes in the May 14 local level elections from the district.
The voter turnout has been estimated at close to 70 percent in the district, according to the EC.
Counting of votes in the KMC had started on Monday afternoon.
Talking to the Post, Chief Election Officer in the District Dipendra Adhikari said that the additional number of staff would help address the painstakingly slow counting of votes in the metropolis.
“Now, we are going faster and efficiently,” said Adhikari, adding, “Vote counting of ward-1 is completed by 2:30 pm and the counting of ward-2 and 32 is going on.”
