Filing of nominations for 2nd phase polls underway in Province 1, 5 & 7 amid tight security
The process of filing nominations by candidates for the second phase of local level elections in 334 local units of provinces 1, 5 and 7 is underway. The Election Commission (EC) said the registration of candidacy for second phase of election has been moving smoothly.
EC Spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma said there have been no reports of any obstruction or any untoward incidents during the filing process. "Candidates flanked by their supporters have reached to the election officer's office to register their candidacy. The nomination filing process is peaceful so far," said Sharma.
Security has been heightened in Kapilvastu in view of the nomination day today. Candidates and supporters have to go through series of police checks before entering the election officer's office to register their candidacy.
In Biratnagar, election fervor has gripped the denizens in election nomination day. Despite soaring heat, large numbers of party cadres have reached at Birendra Assembly Hall in electric rickshaws, motorcycles, cycles and on foot to cheer their candidates.
Those returning after registering their candidacy are wished luck with vermillion powder and garlands by their supporters.
As per the EC’s scheduled, candidates can file nomination from 8am to 4pm on Sunday.
Election in province 2 has been postponement until September 18.
The first phase of polls was held on May 14 in Provinces 3, 4 and 6 to elect representatives for 283 local units.
On the eve of nomination filing date, Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav on Saturday made an appeal to all the political parties and their candidates “to enthusiastically participate” in the nomination process for the second phase of local elections.
The government has committed to ensuring strong security for the polls.
