The government’s indifference towards the implementation of the recommendations made by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is a major hurdle the national human rights watchdog is facing, according to the officials at the Commission.

Presenting the whitepaper amid a programme in the Capital on Monday, the constitutional body said that a taskforce comprised of officials from the NHRC, Attorney General and Nepal government has been formed to change the exiting legal provisions that could make it mandatory to implement the recommendations.

The NHRC, after investigating into the complaints made to it, recommends the government for action.

According to the commission, only 14 percent of the recommendations, most of them related to compensation for the victims, have been implemented.

Between 2000 and 2013, the NHRC has recommended 735 cases of rights violation for action, but only 103 of them were fully implemented by the government.

The 118 recommendations made in the past three years have been incorporated in the three reports tabled in Parliament.
