Debate championship concludes
A debate competition modeled after the British Parliament, MahaSangram 2017, drew to a close on Mondy evening.A debate competition modeled after the British Parliament, MahaSangram 2017, drew to a close on Mondy evening. The five-day event, which also included training and debating in a parliamentary format saw 62 Nepali and international teams compete in categories such as English Opens, Nepali Opens and English Schools. This was the third iteration of the annual event.
The debate championship aims to provide youth with a platform where they can strengthen their quantitative and qualitative presence in the debate community, according to the organisers.
After navigating through three preliminary rounds the grand finale saw Shobita Neupane and Asmita Nepal as the winners in the Nepali category, Anurag Upadhyaya and Avash Byanjankar as the winners of English Opens and Paribesh Sitoula and Shuvam Thakur as the winners of English Schools. Likewise, Shalupa Khanal and Avash Byanjankar were declared the best Nepali and English speakers respectively.
This iteration of championship was also saw a category called School Breaks where teams, comprising two members, debated for an hour divided into two sides—government and opposition—and defended and opposed a motion or a debate topic respectively.
The event was judged by Iffat Sumaiya Mehzabeen, Pawan Adhikari and Poshan Khanal.
