Ram Nath Kovind elected India's 14th President

Jul 20, 2017-Ram Nath Kovind, former Bihar Governor, has been elected India's 14th President on Thursday. 

Kovind, nominated by BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the post, received an overwhelming majority of votes amounting to nearly 66 per cent from the country’s lawmakers.

It is learnt that he will be sworn in on July 25. 

The 71-year-old, who will be the second Dalit to hold the top constitutional position, received 2930 votes with a value of 702044, Indian media reported.

Kovind defeated Meira Kumar, also a low-caste Dalit candidate, who was backed by the centrist Congress party.
