Udayhang Fago, a Nepali man arrested by Siliguri police on the charge of inciting violence in the restive Darjeeling district of West Bengal state, India, was released on bail on Thursday.
The Silguri Sub-Division Court had issued an order to release him on a bail of IRs 50,000.
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), among other groups, have been spearheading agitation in Darjeeling demanding a separate state carved out of West Bengal.
Fago was rounded up on July 21 from Donbosco School area in Silguri, where he had gone along with his sister, for the treatment of his mother Ganga Maya.
National Human Rights Council (NHRC) had initiated the process for the release of Fago.
“I have managed to release Fago on my own effort though the government did not pay much attention on the incident,” said NHRC Chief Tulasi Thapa.
Fago was charged under article 147, 148 and 149 of Indian penal code. He was also accused of attacking policemen and creating obstruction on government services by wielding weapons.
He could have been jailed for seven years, had he been found guilty.
