Acting on a tip off, a police team deployed from the Metropolitan Police Range,Teku, confiscated the huge cache of gold from a Tata Storme vehicle this morning, said AIG Jaya Bahadur Chand. Police have also arrested the vehicle driver Manoj Adhikari of Makawanpur.
During the interrogration, Adhikari said that the gold was smuggled from Kerung border point in Rasuwa district, according to SSP Rabindra Dhanuk.
It is the biggest haul of precious yellow metal ever seized in Nepal.
SSP Dhanuk further informed that some of the gold was to be kept in Kathmandu and some of it was in the process of being smuggled to India.
Earlier on August 31, a police team deployed from Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police had seized 15 kg gold out of 22 kg that was smuggled from China and arrested seven persons in connection with the smuggling.
Similarly, on January 5, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police had seized 33 kg gold from the Tribhuvan International Airport that had passed undetected through the customs.
