Police opened teargas shells after a clash over constructing a water tank turned nasty in Bijayapur of Dharan, Sunsari on Wednesday.

Abbas Miya and Nain Bahadur BK of the Kumar Lingden-led Sanghiya Limbuwan Rajya Parishad were injured after the police intervened to take the situation under control.

Two excavators used for constructing a water tank at Bijaypur-based Panchakanya area in Dharan-14 have been vandalised following the clash between two groups.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed in and around the construction site following the clash.

According to Tara Subba, Chief at the Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, a group of people who were against constructing the water tank hurdled stones and also vandalised the excavators.

Bijaypur area remained tense throughout the day after police fired teargas shells to disperse the agitating mob.

The government under the Integrated Rural Development Project had been operating a drinking water project in Dharan with a loan and assistance from Asian Development Bank for the past three years.

Under the same project, the contractor was supposed to construct four water tanks in various places Dharan. But Sanghiya Limbuwan Rajya Parishad disputed that the construction of water tank in Bijaypur will destroy Durbar area of Limbuwan which has historical and archeological importance.

Meanwhile, organising a corner assembly at Bhanuchok of Dharan, the Bijaypur Dubar Protection Committee has urged the office of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City to relocate the construction site arguing that the construction of water tank in Bijaypur will destroy the importance of Durbar area.
