OWN IT Nepal, a one-day leadership summit for young women organised by Women LEAD Nepal, took place on Saturday, in Kathmandu. Part of the Summit’s stated goals was to “bridge the gap between female leaders of the 21st Century and the young women who aspire to be like them” through inclusive interactive events that

are open to women from all walks of life. The first OWN IT Summit was held at Georgetown University, USA, in 2014 and OWNIT Nepal marks the summit’s first international expansion.

The summit saw discussions on intersectional feminist values and various aspects of women’s representation in society. The main stage panels started off with the ‘Women in Public Service’ panel consisting of Ranju Darshana, Central Committee Member of Bibeksheel-Sajha Party, and Srijana Tiwari, Undersecretary of General Administration. The second stage panel was centred on the topic Women Trailblazers featuring Maya Gurung, a member of the Seven Summit Women’s Team; Priya Adhikari, the first female helicopter captain of Nepal; and Saraswati Khadka, a performer at Circus Kathmandu. The final stage panel on the topic Leading Feminist Change featured Durga Sob, founder of the Feminist Dalit Organization and Dhruba Ghimire, General Secretary of Rural Women’s Action Network (RUWON).

Apart from panel discussions, the summit also consisted of smaller ‘break-out sessions’, where speakers discussed gender based issues by way of personal anecdotes; ‘office hours’, which were essentially Q and A sessions; and workshops where the speakers worked closely with participants to teach them skill sets relative to success in leadership.

Speakers at the event included Aayushi KC [Khalisisi], Prarthana Sakha [Helmets Nepal], Bhintuna Jya-poo [Bhav Products], Bivishika Bhandari [Vagina Monologues], Subuna Basnet [entrepreneur and a former candidate for the House of Representatives], Shristi KC [Blind Rocks], Bhumika Shrestha [transgender rights activist], Dhana Sunar [Dalit rights activist and former member of the National Women’s Commission], the winners of Nepali Traveller’s Solo Women Travel competition, and Raveena Desraj Shrestha, Chief of Consumer Banking and Corporate Affairs at Mega Bank.
