Apr 12, 2018-
The construction of the underpass between Khashibazaar and Bafal Chowk along the Ring Road will be completed in two months, according to the Kathmandu Ring Road Improvement Project (KRRIP).
Officials at the KRRIP said the 800-metre-long four-lane underpass at Kalanki as on the verge of completion with the contractors giving “finishing touches” to the structure that is a part of the 10.5-km Kalanki-Koteshwor road section along the Ring Road.
“The underpass on the Khasibazaar side of the road is complete, while works on the Bafal Chowk side are on. The entire structure will be completed by the end of June and it will be opened to the public from July,” said Niranjan Sharma, an engineer at the KRRIP. An excavator could be seen removing soil from the construction site of the road towards Balaju. “We have almost completed removing sand. After adding a layer of plaster the underpass will be ready for vehicles,” added Sharma.
There will be separate service lanes for vehicles moving on each direction--on the upper deck of the four lane underpass. The project which started in 2013 had been delayed after facing shortage of construction materials due to the devastating earthquake in 2015 and Indian blockade.
Talking to the Post, Sharma said the construction works are expected to be completed on time as the Chinese contractor Shanghai Construction Group carried out the road expansion works in the first lane. More than 90 percent work along the 10.5-km stretch has been completed.
