Terms of NA members through lottery today

The National Assembly will finalise the tenures of its members through a lottery method on Monday.

Among the total 59 NA members, 19 will have a tenure of two years, another 20 will have a four-year term and the rest can see out the full term of six years.

Under the constitutional provision, the NA as a permanent House will have the full term of six years and the vacant positions would be elected on a regular basis.

The fate of NC Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsena, Vice-chair Shashikala Dahal, Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada’s fate would be finalised on Monday. All the members would take part in the lottery draw to select their tenure in the NA.

Of the 59 NA members, 56 were elected from seven provinces--eight from each province, with three others being nominated by the President on the recommendation by the government.Organising a press meet here on Sunday, the NA announced that the terms of the NA members would be determined through the lottery.

All the clusters have been divided into three categories of two years, four years and six years and the lawmakers should pick one of the three categories.According to NA Secretary Rajendra Phuyal, the draw would be held in such a way that all the clusters will have equal representations as per the NA regulation.

“The draw is also a part of the election and the terms would be determined in a transparent manner,” Phuyal said.The NA members may send in their representatives if they could not attend the selection process or else officials at the Parliament Secretariat would draw their lottery pick.
