The PHSC last week called for complaints from the public against the nominee who faces parliamentary hearing before being appointed to head the judiciary. The committee on Monday invited him for the hearing on Thursday. Panelists will question him on the charges and other agendas related to the post he has been named for. They could also put the five complaints before him. Pushpa Bhusal, a member of the PHSC, said the complaints would be discussed on Tuesday to see if they might be raised with Joshee. Complainants have alleged that Joshee spent millions of rupees during the recent marriages of his son and daughter at a five star hotel in Kathmandu.
They wonder how a government official can afford to spend millions of rupees at the wedding ceremony, questioning about the source of income. Some of the complainants also questioned his verdicts, claiming them to be controversial and aimed at benefitting some people.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari will appoint Joshee the CJ only after the 15-member committee representing both the houses of Parliament endorses his name. A two-thirds majority of the hearing committee can disqualify nominees.
The Constitution of Nepal subjects the nominees for constitutional positions and ambassadorial posts to parliamentary hearing before appointment. The panel, however, has not rejected any nominees, even when not all have clean images.
