Two persons died and six went missing when a boat carrying 10 people—twice its capacity—capsized in Begnas Lake on Saturday.
Rabi Khanal, 32, Nawalpur Gaindako; his sons Shankar, 8, and Shiva, 7; Ranjit Gaire, of Bhimad-4, Tanahun; Prachin Poudel, 5, of Pokhara Metropolitan City-31; and Manisha Bajgain, 18, of Pokhara Naya Bus Park, had gone missing after the accident.
Krishna Kumari Bajgain, 50, of Naya Bus Park; and Jamuna Gaire, 28, of Bhimad died during the course of treatment on Saturday. Two persons were rescued by locals.
According to Kaski District Police Chief SP Om Bahadur Rana, locals and relatives of the missing persons, security personnel of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army were engaged in searching for the missing. “People from local Jalari community played a vital role in the search,” he said. “All the bodies have been taken to the Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences, Western Regional Hospital.
The tragedy occurred while the victims were sailing towards the house of Kamal Raj Kandel who had organised a Dar programme—a feast enjoyed by Hindu women during Teej festival—on weekend day.
Kandel, who was supposedly following the capsized vessel on a separate boat, collapsed while trying to rescue the victims. He was rushed to Charak Memorial Hospital for treatment and has been receiving treatment at ICU of the hospital.
