Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) Dr Govinda KC has warned of staging another round of hunger strike from December 17 if the government failed to implement the agreements signed with him.
Organising a press meet on Monday, Dr KC issued the ultimatum to the government to implement the nine-point agreement signed with him. Dr KC had ended his 15th hunger strike on July 26 after the government pledged to meet his demand including the endorsement of the National Medical Education Bill from the parliament.
The anti-corruption crusader has staged a series of hunger strikes demanding reforms in the country’s medical education sector by making necessary amendments in the National Medical Education Bill.
Dr KC has also demanded action against Kathmandu University officials for fixing fees of medical students by violating the government decision. Dr KC has also demanded the government arrest the perpetrators involved in the rape and murder of Nirmala Pant of Kanchanpur.
Earlier, Dr KC had demanded the government withdraw the bill tabled earlier in the Parliament and incorporate the major provisions in the bill in line with the recommendations of a taskforce led by Kedar Bhakta Mathema.
Some of the crucial recommendations made by the taskforce led by Mathema commission are imposing a moratorium on setting up medical colleges in the Kathmandu Valley for 10 years, mandatory for a hospital to run for three years before it expands into a medical college; allowing one university grant affiliation to maximum of five medical colleges.
