Normal life in various parts of Tarai districts has been greatly affected for the last four days due to a sudden drop in temperature.
Residents of Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari and Dhanusha, among other districts of Tarai, said the severity of cold has increased this year. They said they have started to stay indoors to avoid the cold weather.
Harendra Kumar Patel, a resident of Uttarjhitkaiya in Kailaiya Sub Metropolis-16, said he and his family sit around a bonfire to keep warm these days. “The temperature has dipped significantly in the last four days. Senior citizens and children have been affected the most,” said Patel.
Meanwhile, the number of patients suffering from cold-related diseases has increased. Doctors at Kailaya Hospital said patients of pneumonia, asthma and cold diarrhoea, among other ailments, are increasing.
“We have advised people to wear warm clothes and eat warm food,” said Dr Manoj Yadav. However, people from impoverished communities do not have well-insulated homes nor adequate warm clothes to protect themselves from the cold.
