Writing is comparatively easier than speaking in any language. Having communication skills means there can be proper exchange of information, so it is important to acquire this skill while learning a language. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are the four foundations of learning a language. Mastering all these four skills are equally important. Nonetheless, speaking a second language fluently, logically and coherently is not something everybody is good at.
One of the reasons people hesitate to speak English is due to the difficulty of accurate pronunciation and regional accents.
Those individuals who grew up learning English and getting a chance to speak it on a daily basis with pals, schoolteachers and family members have an advantage over people from rural backgrounds have less exposure to spoken English. In spite of the communicative teaching pattern used in many schools in urban areas, a multitude of job-seeking youths in Nepal lack the ability to speak it with confidence.
The new job scenario requires constant communication with co-workers for team work, interaction or communication with foreign clients and companies. In addition, the importance of communicative skills has been felt due to the establishment of multi-national companies and banks.
Furthermore, some corporations want to have inter-personal skills to forge public relations. To expand and publicise their business networks, some companies have been using customer care cells to deal with their clients directly on the phone. So good communication skills have become essential nowadays. Today, what matters immensely is effective communication in English. Whether appearing for a job interview or filling out a job application form, proficiency in English is required. English communication skill is an added qualification or asset. Many institutions which offer English language courses have been mushrooming in cities across the country. There are also English learning tools and programmes which can be downloaded on the internet.
In order to increase one's communication skills, one must first be a good listener. An individual should regularly listen to the news and group discussions in English on radio and TV. Second, an individual should overcome shyness and take part in group activities, mock interview sessions or talk sessions with native speakers if possible or with English speaking friends and teachers. Third, practice using appropriate words and tones at the right time. On the whole, effective communication skills in English in any sphere of life will help a lot in ensuring success in an individual's effort. With globalisation and scientific advancement, communication skill in English is a must.
