Govt prepares for Saarc meet

The government has geared up preparations for the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) Summit scheduled for November in Kathmandu.

The first meeting of the 18th Saarc Summit Preparation and Coordination Committee was held on Wednesday to discuss on necessary arrangements to successfully conduct the summit. The meeting led by Minister for Foreign Affairs Mahendra Bahadur Pandey was attended by chief secretary, secretaries from the various ministries, chief of Nepal Police and other senior government officials.

According to a statement from the ministry, Pandey underscored the need for cooperation among various committees and sub-committees formed for the preparation. The meeting reviewed the status of groundwork for the summit, discussed the major issues to be carried out by Nepal and agreed to expedite preparations in a coordinated manner, read the statement.

The meeting also studied the report of the Rapid Appraisal Team formed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs to recommend appropriate venues for the summit and suitable accommodation for the participants.
