BRB camp to join CC on conditions
May 12, 2014-
The Baburam Bhattarai faction of the UCPN (Maoist) has said it is ready to join the party’s powerful Central Committee (CC) if Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal agrees to fulfill a number of conditions including coming clean on the issues of peace and constitution.
Leaders close to Bhattarai said that Dahal should ensure “a democratic culture” within the party, and expressed concern over threats issued by the Dahal faction to the leaders and cadres who took Bhattarai’s side in the grass roots of the party.
“We are not splitting up the party, but party Chairman should ensure that the dissenters are allowed to express their views and opinions freely in all matters concerning the party,” said leader Devendra Poudel.
Dahal had on Sunday interacted with Poudel and assured that he was ready to address the issues raised by Bhattarai and his faction during the party’s national convention.
A meeting of CC has been called for May 15 to discuss ways to bring the Bhattarai faction on board. But as Bhattarai is currently on a China visit, leaders have asked Dahal to cancel the meet.
Similarly, Bhattarai’s faction has also demanded that Dahal come clean on the issues of peace and constitution.
“The party appears to be determined not to fully cooperate with Bhattarai in his efforts to settle the contentious issues of new constitution drafting after he took the charge of Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee,” said Poudel, adding that Dahal needs to be hardpressed into choosing between peace and a revolt. But leaders close to Dahal say that the Bhattarai faction is spreading false propaganda that Dahal is against the political line of peace and constitution. On the organisational issues, the Bhattarai faction has demanded “respectable positions” in the CC as well as the district level party mechanisms, alleging that chairman Dahal intentionally sidelined the leaders close to Bhattarai while selecting key party functionaries during the party’s recently concluded national convention.
However, Dahal’s faction is claiming exactly the opposite, saying the list of CC members prepared by Dahal was approved by Bhattarai during the party’s meeting.
In a press conference on Monday, Dahal had said Bhattarai’s warning that leaders close to him will not join the party’s CC shocked him in the national convention. The intra-party rift has deepened after the national convention.
