FSU poll deferred again

The Free Student Union election has been deferred once again, owing to the protest from various student unions close to different opposition parties.
A tripartite meeting between Tribhuvan University officials, agitating student unions and the unions advocating for the polls on Friday decided to postpone the election and fix the new date on consensus of all the unions. “We have agreed to postpone the date as per the demands of the agitating unions,” said Ganga Bahadur Thapa, the chief at Department of Student Welfare and Sports in TU.
A bloc of 19 student unions affiliated to UCPN-Maoist, CPN-Maoist, Madhes-based parties and other fringe parties had announced to boycott the polls set for June 1, accusing the TU of fixing the poll date without their consent.
This is the fifth time the poll has been deferred in the last two years. The biennial election of student bodies has not taken place for the last five years due the differences among the student unions on the electoral system.
Unions led by the Maoist close All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary are in support of proportional electoral system, but Nepali Congress affiliated Nepal Student Union wants direct election.
