The wedding ceremony of Rukmini Sah and Ram Narayan Sah at Prasauni in the district was disrupted on Monday following a dispute over jewellery and make-up items for the bride.
The dispute started after Rukmini’s parents reportedly accused groom’s parents of not bringing jewellery and make-up items for her to wear during the ceremony.
Sixteen-year-old Rukmini, daughter of Hira Sah of Prasauni VDC-8 and 18-year-old Ram Narayan, son of Gyanchan Sah of Pathara VDC-5, were set to get married after the bride’s parents reportedly provided Rs 300,000 in cash and a motorcycle as dowry to the groom’s family.
While the wedding attendants returned after the incident, the bride’s parents with the help of local people briefly locked up the groom’s father and brother at Hira’s house on Monday night saying that a total of Rs 540,000 was spent in the ceremony and that the groom’s should compensate it.
On Tuesday morning, a discussion between the two sides and local people announced marriage break-up and decided that the groom’s parents should return the dowry received from bride’s parents. Gyanchan said that they were hurt due to alleged misdemeanor of the bride’s sister and brother-in-law, and accused them of disrupting the marriage.
Priest Mritunjaya Kumar Tripathi said that failure of the groom’s parents to bring enough ornaments and make-up materials for the bride led to the dispute.
Rukmini’s brother Bhulawan accused the groom’s side of trying to misbehave them.
