Jun 25, 2014-
Cigarettes worth Rs 220 million and physical infrastructure worth Rs 60 million were damaged in the arson, according to Surya Nepal.
The fire could be controlled only 10 hours after it started due to unavailability of adequate fire brigade vehicles. “Such a huge loss is a result of the unavailability of fighting vehicles,” said officiating president of Lekhnath Chamber of Commerce Laxmi Prasad Tripathi.
There is only one fire brigade vehicle in Lekhnath Municipality. According to Ravi KC, corporate vice-president of Surya Nepal, the company’s regional godown had stocked low-price cigarettes. “That’s why the loss has been relatively lower,” said KC, adding 114 million sticks of cigarettes were destroyed in the blaze. The godown had stocked Surya, Shikhar, Khukuri, Bijuli and Chautara brand cigarettes.
The police said the fire broke out due an electric short-circuit. A team of Nepal Police, Army and Armed Police Force along with locals dowsed the fire. Besides the fire brigade vehicle, 10 water tankers were also used to control the arson.
The popular tourist destination witnesses around 10-15 incidents of fire every month during the summer season, and around 4-5 similar incidents during winter season.
