Deukhuri villages inundated
Jul 7, 2014-
More than 100 houses in Deukhuri have been inundated as the floodwaters from Dolai and Singe streams entered into the settlement on Monday.
The water level in the streams surged significantly owing to the incessant rainfall in the area for past two days. The houses at Laththahawa, Paharuwa and Singe settlements in Sisahaniya and Dodhahigaun in Sonpur have been waterlogged. Villagers said some of the house walls also collapsed because of the force of water.
The Water Induced Disaster Prevention Office had recently constructed an embankment on the banks of Dolai stream. The embankment is, however, just 242 metres along the stream and the floodwaters reportedly rised above it.
Gangaram Bhattarai, chairman of the embankment construction support committee, said the embankment could be constructed only in 242 metres area due to the lack of budget. Ten VDCs in Deukhuri are at high risk of flooding from Rapti and various other streams in the area.
Similarly, transportation along Lamahi-Tulsipur road stretch was obstructed on Monday afternoon after the roads submerged in floodwater. The transportation is obstructed every monsoon for the section does not have bridges across the streams.
Security agencies are on high alert for rescue mission in the area. Chief District Officer Dinesh Bhattarai said Nepal Police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force are kept prepared with necessary equipments to rescue people from the floods.
Similarly, our correspondent from Bardiya said that dozens of houses in Gulariya municipality and four nearby villages have been inundated.
